THE ageing Mitsubishi Pajero has been given another shot in the arm.

New 2014 models will hit showrooms this week, offering five-star safety (updated from four) and armed only with turbo diesel powerplants. The only 2.8-litre petrol model ($71,490) has been deleted due to flagging demand.

Prices have remained the same across the range.

Despite its age, the Pajero is still selling in reasonable numbers. According to VFACTS, so far this year the Pajero has taken 5.9% of the market (2578 units) behind the Toyota Prado, Ford Territory, Holden Captiva 7 and Toyota Kluger.

Five-star safety comes courtesy of improved steering column energy absorbing characteristics, along with passenger seat belt reminderss, along with Mitsubishi's RISE body protection along with front driver and passenger, side and curtain SRS airbags, , Isofix child restraints (July onwards) and reversing camera.

All engines are the 3.2-litre common rail turbo diesel engine which generate 147kW of power at 3800rpm and 441Nm of torque at 2000rpm with average fuel efficiency of 9.0 litres/100km.

Mitsubishi's corporate communications manager Caitlin Beale said there was no word yet on when an all-new Pajero model would become available.
