Extra funding for Breast Cancer Family History Clinic

A BREAST screen clinic, which draws women with a history of the disease from across regional Queensland to Brisbane, can do an extra seven scans a week for the next year.

Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said the Breast Cancer Family History Clinic, on Brisbane's northside, would have an extra $400,000 which would go towards hiring an extra nurse and radiographer.

He said the money would result in 350 women being screened or re-screened, five repeat scans and two new clients a week.

Mr Springborg said the faulty breast cancer gene could be inherited with these high-risk women, from age 30, having a 70% risk of developing the disease than the general population.

He said these women also had a 40% chance of developing ovarian cancer.

Mr Springborg said deaths from breast cancer had declined in Queensland by 28% since the breast screen program's inception and survival rates had improved to about 89%.

He said breast cancer had touched his family, like most people, and he would endeavour to continue the extra funding in coming budgets.

BreastScreen Queensland provides free breast cancer screening to women aged 50 to 69.

Women in their 40s and over the ages of 70 can also access free screening but this is the only clinic which will scan women as young as 30 at high risk.

To book a breast screen, phone 13 20 50.
