Protest march in Mackay over the alleged police rape case

A GROUP of anonymous activists is calling for Mackay residents to join a protest march over a police rape court case.

The group, which has previously targeted Premier Campbell Newman following the introduction of anti-bikie laws, has started an Anonymous Mackay Facebook page and uploaded an online video about the march and court case.

The video features a woman speaking in a digitally-altered voice from behind a mask about the two junior police officers accused of rape while on duty.

The woman also mentions Mackay Magistrate Damien Dwyer, who granted bail to the two men.

But bail was not opposed by the police prosecutor.

The march will coincide with the next court appearance for the two accused police officers, who were suspended from their duties on full pay and given time to show cause as to why they should retain their positions with the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

The Anonymous label is associated with an international network of activist and hacktivist groups that have become well known for publicity stunts and attacks on governments, religious groups and corporate bodies.

On the Anonymous Mackay Facebook page it stated, "we wish to stand silently to protest our objection to bail being granted to these people".

The march will be held on May 9 at 8.30am across from Bridges at the Bluewater Quay.

A QPS spokesperson would not comment on whether the two officers had shown cause to keep their jobs.

"As this matter is before the court, it is not appropriate to make comment at this time," the spokesperson said.

When asked if the Queensland Police Service was aware of Anonymous Mackay the police spokesperson said, "where possible the QPS monitors social media to identify issues that may require a policing response".

Will you attend the anonymous march?
