Fad diets a waste of time but you can have your cake...

IF EATING cake for breakfast and still losing weight sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

And in the case of the Dessert with Breakfast diet, it really is too good to be true, says Eat Wise For Life dietician Susanna Mihalik.

She said the study by researchers from Tel Aviv University followed 200 non-diabetic obese adults who were assigned to eat one of two low-calorie diets.

Half ate a large breakfast with a sweet treat while the other allowed for a larger meal in the day.

The study found those who ate the sweet treat lost more weight.

However, Ms Mihalik said there were many loopholes in the study and it was fad diets like these that made her mad.

"First of all, because they were on a calorie restricted diet, regardless of what they ate, cake or not, eating a calorie restricted diet will cause weight loss," she said.

"My advice is not to do fad diets like these.

"Allow yourself a variety of nutritious foods from all food groups and limit your intake of low nutrient dense foods such as soft drinks, cakes and crisps on a daily basis.

"Fill up on the good stuff and eat within your caloric limitation.

"Add some daily activity and exercise and you will feel energised, happy, in control and have no cravings. Just eating cake for breakfast is not going to solve anything or make you lose weight."

"But if you are eating healthy and doing exercise, there is room for cake too. If you want to eat it for breakfast or after dinner is up to you, as long as you don't over do it."

Potential dangers fad diets

Acai Berry Diet - gained popularity after being promoted on Oprah

3 Day Diet - these are popular due to the promise of instant gratification.

Hollywood Diet - low in calories and involves drinking a "miracle juice"

Grapefruit Diet - this diet says grapefruit burns fat, but grapefruit can interact with medication, so beware.
