Family and friends to farewell teen killed in highway crash

THE CLAIRVIEW teenager who was killed in a car crash south of Mackay earlier this month will be farewelled by family and friends on Friday.

Mark Slatter, 13, tragically died when the vehicle in which he was travelling with his mother and 10-year-old brother Aaron crashed on the Bruce Hwy south of Sarina.

The Sarina State High School student has been described as an avid darts player with a cheeky smile.

His mother and brother were taken to hospital with injuries. Aaron suffered a fractured foot, while his mother, Rachel, had an arm injury that required surgery.

His father, Eric was travelling in the car behind and was one of the first to respond.

Mark was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Sunday, the day of the crash, the family was travelling north from their home in Clairview to the Bluewater Lagoon in Mackay.

The partner of Mark's cousin, told the Daily Mercury last week it had been an extremely tough time for the very "tight-knit" family.

"Why do people have to leave the world like that at such a young age and why do accidents like these happen?" she said.

Mark's funeral service will be held at the Newhaven Chapel on Harbour Rd, Mackay.

Family and friends are asked to wear red and blue in his honour.
