A TOOWOOMBA family is using their personal heartache to raise awareness about a developmental deformation.

Milla Aktinson was born on July 15, 2015. She's Laura Hunter's first child.

Milla is a bubbly, loving baby. However, when she was 15 months old, Ms Hunter's mothering instinct warned her something was not right.

She noticed her baby had a slight limp and turned-out left foot.

When she took her to a doctor, she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, which is the congenital or developmental deformation or misalignment of the hip joint.

Milla's already had several surgeries and is booked in for another in two weeks.

"It's been a long, hard and painful journey," Ms Hunter said.

"It was a late diagnosis and this is why the journey for her to heal is so long. Whereas if it was picked up earlier surgery may have been avoidable."

Ms Hunter's message to other mothers is to trust their gut and look for symptoms early on.

In infants, parents might notice one leg is longer than the other.

Once a child begins walking, a limp may develop or during diaper changes, one hip may be less flexible than the other.

Healthy Hips Week is from April 10-16. It will be Australia's first week dedicated to raising awareness about hip dysplasia.
