Fence jumpers and rude slogans not on for Splendour
OFFENSIVE slogans and fence-jumpers will be targeted under strict security guidelines outlined by organisers today as the countdown begins for this year’s Splendour in the Grass festival.
In what will be the biggest Splendour yet since the event began in 2001, more than 32,000 patrons are expected to make their way through the gates when the three-day festival officially kicks-off on Friday.
Police have issued a stern warning to festival-goers a crackdown on drugs will be in place and anyone caught with illicit drugs could face criminal charges and the risk of being ejected or refused entry.
Police will also crackdown on fence-jumping which has posed a serious problem in the past.
Splendour co-producer Paul Piticco welcomed the police crackdown, advising there would be zero tolerance to fence jumping.
“We’ve had a lot of talks with police about it and their policy at the moment is that if they catch them and we present them to them, they’ll be prosecuted, it’s not allowed,” Piticco said.
“It’s strongly discouraged and police will be dealing with the matter.”
Piticco said fence jumping put the safety of other festival-goers at risk.
“If we don’t know who is in here or how old they are, it’s really hard to take care of them and to be responsible for them,” he said.
Of the 32,500 patrons expected, up to 18,000 are set to take advantage of on-site camping, with a “camp with car” option added for 2016.
While Piticco encouraged campers to bring their vehicles, he warned offensive slogans emblazoned on vans - such as those on Wicked Camper vans - were not welcome.
“There is a policy led, as it should be, by the ladies in our organisation and I’m fully supportive of it,” he said.
“We discourage any camper van that has any obscenities and if it’s deemed to be offensive - and not just to women - we have the right to refuse entry.
“There’s children and families here, so anyone planning on bringing in any kind of signage or anything on a van that’s deemed offensive, they should really rethink it.”
Splendour, now in its 16th year, features over 100 artists including The Cure, The Strokes, The Avalanches and Violent Soho.
Tickets for the festival sold out in just over an hour when released earlier this year.
