Festival of Uki village 'creative-natives' to amp up Ukitopia festival

A 'CRAFTERNOON', ping pong competition and bush tucker tour of local delicacies along the banks of the Tweed River are just some of the sweeteners on offer at the annual Ukitopia festival to be held this weekend.

Organising committee member Jim Williams said organisers expect several hundred visitors to visit the historic and colourful village for the three-day eclectic event.

Punters who come to the village can expect Kyogle Rd to light up with a hive of activity, Mr Williams said.

"Uki is like one of those places on the North Coast that has a lot of people that are artistic, whether it be painters or musicians, who have come to the area from the cities,” Mr Williams said.

"They are all coming together for Ukitopia to culminate their passion in music and art.

"It's our way of showing what the creative-natives around here do.”

Saturday, September 17, will see group yoga, a 'crafternoon', ping pong tournament and bush tucker tour on the along the banks of the Tweed River.

Crafts will include pottery, hat decoration, leather work, decorating tea light holders, life drawing, beeswax cloth-making, origami, wool spinning, badge-making and bush and fairy house-making.

"The 'crafteroon' is about letting people have a go at all sorts of things, most of them are free, some will charge because they have materials involved,” Mr Williams said.

Also on offer, there will be a Chai tent, wine, nibbles and an art exhibition in the Uki Hall, to highlight this year's theme of a Creative Weekend.

It kicks off with laid-back soft acoustic music by the Shades of Grey, at 6.30pm. Not to be confused with the risque Hollywood film, the acoustic band's musicians are grey-haired.

Then, on Sunday, September 18, the popular Uki Buttery Bazaar will be held, showcasing an exotic array of market stalls, live music and food.

"This family-friendly event is a great time to soak up the atmosphere of Uki village and interact with its creative natives,” Mr Williams said.
