Banana Festival's on a roll
A GROUP of 15 women will literally roll into the Tweed Valley Banana Festival street parade tomorrow.
The roller derby team, the Tweed Valley Rollers, will don Rocky Horror Show costumes to fit in with the theme of the parade’s “musical” theme.
Team member and Mullumbimby resident Vanessa Brady, or Block Ness Monster as she is known on the rink, said it was an easy choice.
“We generally wear stuff like this anyway,” Ms Brady said.
“Lots of people think we are going to be dressed as bananas for some reason.”
Block Ness Monster said the majority of team skaters were from the Murwillumbah-Tweed area and happened to be big fans of the yellow fruit.
“A lot of us eat bananas straight afterwards and usually beforehand too,” she said.
“I always have them in the car because I have kids.”
And fellow team member and first-aid officer Cassie Freriechs, aka Chyna, could not praise the fruit enough.
“Bananas are a very good source of nutrition for wannabe roller girls,” she said.
Ms Brady said she hoped the parade inspired festival-goers to join the team.
“We are trying to find some fresh new skaters – a fresh meat intake,” she said.
“There are 14 on our travel team.”
She said the sport did get a little rough, but hoped that would not scare off potential team members.
“We’ve only had a few broken bones.”
Ms Brady said she was expecting a great response from the public, but was ready for anything.
“Even if somebody leaves a banana peel on the road the Tweed Valley Rollers will roll on,” she said.
