Festive elves alert

NOVEMBER it may be, but Christmas is looming large on the horizon, especially for Orphans' Christmas organiser Julie Ferguson.

Ms Ferguson is once again looking for people to help her organise and prepare for Christmas dinner in the Botanic Garden for those who would otherwise be spending Christmas Day alone.

"Last year we had tremendous help from a wonderful group of elves, I couldn't have done it without them," she said.

Ms Ferguson said the day had grown out of her own experience of being alone in Coffs Harbour on Christmas Day some years ago and as a result she joined forces with Robyn Milne to cater for others in similar situations.

"I don't want people to feel like I felt on that day," she said.

The annual Christmas in the Gardens dinner is for travellers away from home, newcomers, backpackers, people who want to avoid arguments at family gatherings, people with no family ... all have been welcome to gather in the Botanic Garden on Christmas Day and share lunch for the past five years.

This year, there have already been some generous donations, including a whole pig from Casson Pty Ltd.

But Ms Ferguson still needs people to help by donating Christmas fare and decorations, helping to set up tables, chairs and decorations and by transporting diners to and from the party on the day.

Ms Ferguson said diners should come along with good humour and a gift to the value of $5 for what she said was "a wonderful day" with food, fun and Christmas music.

For more information and to offer your help, contact Ms Ferguson on 6652 9058 or mobile 0421 430 175.
