Field of Women raises funds for fight against cancer

IT WAS 54 shades of pink at Tweed Heads Bowls Club on Saturday.

This year's Mini-Field of Women Event was a great success according to Tweed/Byron Local Health Services breast care coordinator Jane Kelly.

"It was wonderful," she said.

"All the speakers made us laugh and cry; they were just amazing."

All three speakers, Audrey McDonald, Julie Kelly and Jen Kenny have had the disease affect their life in someway of another.

Mrs McDonald lost her husband to breast cancer.

She had a blue cut out planted in memory of her husband at the event.

"Two of the three speakers had never spoken in public," Mrs Kelly said.

"It was just really great.

"It's important to raise community awareness."

Breast cancer support group member Lois O'Connor attended the day.

One of her sisters died of cancer, the other had been in remission for 13.

Her best friend also beat breast cancer.

The Banora Point resident also said the day was wonderful.

"They thanked me and gave me a bottle of wine," she said.

"It was lovely to be recognised."

Mrs O'Connor is trying to raise funds for Pink Ribbon Bali to purchase a mammogram machine; she also is part of a breast cancer support group.

Next year the Mini-Field day event will be held in another location, currently Tumbulgum or Kingscliff are on the cards.

Mrs Kelly said early detection saved lives and checks are available at Tweed Hospital, call 13 20 50.
