RELATIONSHIPS can be difficult and with the added pressure of being public figures it can be like "living in a fish bowl", according to a Tweed psychologist.

The public break-up of former ironman Grant Kenny and radio broadcaster and television presenter Fifi Box, has certainly grabbed attention with the story remaining in one of the most read stories since before Christmas.

Alchemy Psychology director John Kotroni said public figures had a lot more pressure on their relationships.

"Public figures have all the same problems as we all do but it is magnified by living in a fishbowl," Mr Kotroni said.

"The relationship and the individual in it are placed under the magnifying glass where all their insecurities are amplified and dissected in the media.

"As well as the constant inneuendos, mistruths and rumours that are spread also have an effect.

"Public figures are constantly scrutinised and their imperfections and indiscretions are held up for all to see and this can put an enormous pressure on the individuals, and their relationship."

A Sydney newspaper reported late last month that Kenny and Box were expecting a child, but had broken up and were now living separate lives.

"Every relationship is different however people are often creatures of habit so they exhibit patterns of behaviour that remain the same," Mr Kotroni said.

"It is important early in a relationship to look at oneself and be aware of this. Often how we are in a relationship can be a reflection of other factors that are not about the relationship.

"It can be about what happened in our last relationship, it can be about our fears or about our dreams (our programming).

"It is important early on to be aware of the reality of what is happening and not use view it through our hopes or fears. In my training as a relationship psychologist the issues that lead to relationship breakdown are always present at the start but are often ignored or justified or overlooked."

Ms Box hosted a show on the Triple M radio network about relationships.
