Filmmaker to visit Murwillumbah

THE economics of happiness is the ethos behind a movie set to screen at the Regent Cinema, Murwillumbah on February 2.

Supported by the Caldera Environment Centre and the International Society for Education and Culture, Helena Norberg-Hodge's film illuminates the impact of government subsidised products sold by trans-national corporations on a once subsistent community called Ladakh.

Quite a mouthful.

For the interested layperson, the film features a chorus of voices from six continents calling for systemic economic change, including David Korten, Bill McKibben, Vandana Shiva, Rob Hopkins, Richard, Heinberg, Juliet Schor, Michael Shuman, Helena Norberg-Hodge and Samdhong Rinpoche, the Prime Minister of Tibet's government in exile.

"The film highlights how we are all a product of an economic system that creates disconnection - a rationale which pervades our society, and benefits only corporations relying on a consumerist culture," said Caldera Environment Centre spokesperson Roxanna Flynn.

"The simplest example is our disconnection from the source of our food.

"Apart from the environmental devastation caused by the actions of these global corporations, the disconnect manifests in people as lack of purpose, mental illness, and conflict, deeply affecting our young people.

"If you are a parent, teacher or friend of young people I urge you to go along and see the film.

"You will be moved and awakened to the bigger picture but you will be much clearer about the simple decisions we can take to change this situation for ourselves, our children and future generations."

The film will be screened at the Regent Cinema on Thursday February 2 at 7.30pm followed by a discussion with the film-maker.

Advanced purchase tickets are $10 from the Regent or the Caldera Environment Centre or $15 on the night.
