Finally, a team to call our own

FOOTBALL fans across the Tweed and Gold coasts have longed for a team to call their own, and tonight they wait no more.

At 7.25pm Skilled Park will erupt to the chants of thousands of eager supporters: “Gold Coast United..... Gold Coast United!” they will cry.

The droning boos greeting fellow newcomers North Queensland Fury will wash away as vice-captain Michael Thwaite leads his men up the tunnel and onto the hallowed turf.

United have arrived - Thank you Clive Palmer.

“It will be our first test and I'll be looking to put my best 11 players on the park; I won't be holding back,” head coach Miron Bleiberg said.

“The game versus Fury will be our first serious challenge against a team from the A-League, and I think there is additional interest because it is a match between the two newest clubs.”

The final pieces of Bleiberg's jigsaw have fallen into place with the arrival of his import players, skipper Jason Culina, experienced campaigners Matt Osman and Adam Griffiths, Brazilian trio Milson, Robson and Jefferson, and prolific striker Joel Porter.

However, injuries have plagued the A-League novices, and the late withdrawal of Socceroo Culina through hamstring woes and the lengthy injury concerns of Jefferson and star Kingscliff recruit James Brown have put a dampener on tonight's proceedings.

The missing trio aside, Bleiberg believes the fans will be in for a treat when his troops clash with Ian Ferguson's men, the first opportunity for United's players and fans to get a feel for the majestic surroundings of Skilled Park

“All the recent speculation regarding where this game will be played has just added more spice to the match, and I'm sure the supporters will be entertained,” he said.

“For the coaches of both teams it will be a very useful exercise and will give us an indication of where we both stand in terms of our recruiting.

“Our players also need to see where they stand at this stage of our preparation and it will be great for them to have a full 90- minute run at Skilled Park.”

Kick off is at 7.30pm.
