Fingal Head residents evacuated
FINGAL Head residents have been ordered to evacuate by Richmond-Tweed SES Controller Simon Gregg.
Mr Gregg said as a result of the flood level predicted for the area the SES was directing Fingal Head to be evacuated immediately.
"Do not delay your evacuation (as) roads will be congested or closed," he said.
"You could become trapped and need rescue.
"Remaining in flooded areas is dangerous and may place your life at risk."
He encouraged people to stay with friends or relatives or, alternatively, go to an evacuation centre at Kingscliff TAFE on Cudgen Rd.
"People with caravans can relocate to the Recreation St Sports Field," Mr Gregg said.
"In the instance the evacuation route becomes closed, locate to Fingal Rovers Surf Club, Fingal Head.
"Special transport can also be provided on request if necessary, telephone 132 500."
Fingal Head Community Association president Dawn Walker said water over Fingal Rd ended past the Old Boat Harbour, at about Lagoon Rd.
"When we drove through about 2pm (NSW) the road was all river," Ms Walker said.
"I'm very high up (near the lighthouse) so not experiencing the flood as such, but the rain has not stopped."
She said water rose to the bottom of her 4WD's door and there were four spots along Fingal Rd under "deep water".
Fingal resident Greg Pilling said water over the road began at the creek from the Tweed River which feeds Wommin Lake.
"Then all the way up Fingal Rd," Mr Pilling said. "Our driveway was underwater, and I can at least see it now.
"The only cars driving up and down were 4WDs - I passed a 4WD on my way up and asked if it got any worse.
"He said it got 'a lot worse'.
"I'm not concerned because the water level has gone down a little bit since lunch time, but the rain is very persistent to say the least."
