Fingal Beach wins swag of awards including cleanest in NSW

FINGAL Head is officially the state's cleanest beach.

Tweed residents may already know about the coastal gem, but the NSW Environment Protection Authority was blown away by our pristine little paradise, awarding it the State's overall 2013 Clean Beach award.

"I congratulate the Fingal Head Coastcare community for their achievement in successfully engaging members of their community to work together to enhance their local beach area; it is through participation and initiatives such as this that we can bring about a positive change for the environment," the authority chair and chief executive Barry Buffier said.

And the praise kept coming.

"We congratulate Fingal Head and each of the state winners, who have set an impressive standard for other beaches to follow," Keep Australia Beautiful NSW chief executive David Imrie said.

Fingal Head also took out the Young Legends Award and was highly commended in the Environmental Protection Award, following its selection as a finalist in every category of the awards.

After Fingal was selected as a finalist late last month, Fingal Head Coastcare secretary Jocelyn Steele said the win "would be the icing on the cake".

"I think the judges were very impressed with the energy put into making Fingal special," Mrs Steele said at the time.

"Looking after our beaches is supremely important and I think Fingal is paramount to that."

Mr Buffier praised the awards as an important part of promoting NSW Government's $465.7 million Waste Less, Recycle More initiative.

His sentiment was echoed by Mr Imrie: "Through the Clean Beaches Program we celebrate the achievements of coastal communities who actively make our beaches cleaner and a more sustainable environment."

The Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Clean Beaches - Connecting our Coast Awards encourage and recognise coastal communities, local councils, volunteers and surf lifesaving clubs who protect the NSW coastline.

The program empowers these groups to work for a cleaner, more sustainable environment.
