Man in hospital after fire destroys Goonellabah home

A MAN remains in Lismore Base Hospital after a Goonellabah home was destroyed by fire yesterday morning.

A Fire and Rescue spokesman said two tankers were called to the home in Eggins Pl at about 12.40 am.

Police, paramedics and the Goonellabah Hazmat unit also responded to the incident.

"NSW Fire and Rescue firefighters arrived on scene and found a fibro-and-tile house well alight," the spokesman said.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus searched the home but found nobody.

The fire was in the front section of the house and roof. The house was owned by the Department of Housing.

The blaze destroyed the house and was extinguished by 2am.

Richmond Local Area Command Inspector Mick Dempsey said the 58-year-old man who lived in the house and managed to escape the fire was known to police.

"The man was taken to Lismore Base Hospital where he is being treated for a condition not related to the fire," he said.

Investigations continue and anyone with information is urged to phone Lismore police on 6626 0599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
