Fire destroys houseboat on Tweed River

A HOUSEBOAT has been destroyed in an early morning blaze at West Tweed.

The eight-metre vessel was moored on the Tweed River at the back of a Gollan Dr residence when the fire broke out at about 2am Monday.

The owners of the boat were asleep in the house at the time but were woken by the noise of the blaze.

Tweed Heads Fire Station relieving station officer Fraser Hindry said two crews responded to the call but they were unable to save the boat.

"By the time we got there there wasn't a great deal we could save," he said.

"The hull was still sound but the aluminium structure was destroyed."

A Hazmat crew also attended the incident to contain any run-off and prevent any contamination of the river.

No-one was on board the houseboat when the fire broke out.

It is thought an electrical fault sparked the fire.
