Fire rips through Big Banana's lookout

THE future of a Coffs Harbour icon is in question after a fire late in the night on Australia Day.

Prior to midnight emergency crews responded to reports of a fire at the lookout above the Big Banana.

While the glow from the fire at around midnight could be seen from long distances, the reality of the blaze was not good news for those who are fans of the scenic view available from the lookout.

Police and NSW Fire & Rescue were called to a spectacular fire that was visible from around Coffs Harbour and gutted the Big Banana's disused Scenic Lookout building.

Crews had difficulty accessing the site initially due to the remote location and had to run hoses up to 100 meters from the fire truck.

Fire and Rescue station officer Sally Foote said the cause of the fire is initially undetermined but indicated the entire structure may need to be demolished.

Police enquiries are continuing.
