Fired up about business move

FOR many people, fire safety is something they rarely consider.

But for Leo Peek and Dan Collins, it is something they take very seriously – they've just bought the business.

Fire Cover Australia has relocated from it's Machinery Dr address in Tweed Heads South to Enterprise Ave.

Although they've only moved around the corner, Mr Collins, the new manager, believes the move is one of the best things to happen to the business.

“We really just wanted to improve the conditions for staff,” Mr Collins said.

“By moving the business here we show our commitment to our staff.

“They were so crammed into the previous address, we knew they couldn't keep working like that.

“It cost us an enormous amount for us to move, but it's a building we can grow into.”

The business installs and services fire safety equipment for householders and businesses including fire alarms, extinguishers, blankets, sprinklers and much more.

Although this may seem simple, the biggest factor for fire technicians is insurance.

“We just want to provide a reliable and honest service,” Mr Collins said.

“In the fire industry the key is to have enough volume to have the relevant insurance. A sole trader struggles to afford the insurances that come with protecting people, homes and businesses from fire.

“That's how people know they can trust us, we keep their insurance up to date.”

And there's a fair amount of competition too.

“We service the Gold Coast, Tweed Coast and Murwillumbah,” Mr Collins said.

“We have competition on the Gold Coast and also in Brisbane so giving people someone local is the key for us.

“Ultimately we'd like to own this area – we are a local business and we hope people look at us that way.

“We just want to let people know we've moved and there is new management.”

To become a fire technician there is a range of licensing tests and training courses with technicians requiring a separate licence for each safety apparatus they handle.

Fire Cover Australia is located on Enterprise Ave, Tweed Heads South.
