Firefighters gear for worst as temperatures to hit 40

VICTORIAN fire fighters are preparing for the worst as weather boffins and the state's Country Fire Authority warn temperatures could top 40 degrees on Saturday.

Although the Bureau of Meteorology had yet to release any new warnings or fire bans in relation to the scorching heat - these were expected later on Friday.

The Age reported CFA crews were preparing for a "bad fire day", particularly after a fire east of Bendigo destroyed 1130ha on Boxing Day.

Extreme fire warnings were issued for the state's northern areas with severe warnings for the south-west, north central and central parts of the state.
