Firefighters quell high-rise blaze

QUICK action from firefighters contained a fire to one apartment on the upper floors of a Palm Beach high-rise yesterday afternoon.

The fire at Nineteenth Avenue on the Beach, Palm Beach, forced residents to evacuate.

Firefighters were alerted to the kitchen fire on the 14th floor of the high-rise apartments about 3.20pm.

A back-to-base alarm alerted authorities to the blaze at the 16-floor building.

Apartment manager Wendy Ward said the fire started in an unoccupied apartment and they were “very lucky” that it was contained by firefighters.

“The kitchen in the sub-penthouse was guttered and will require rebuilding,” Ms Ward said.

“We had about 40 guests and residents evacuated from the building,” she said.
