Firefighters stretched tackling blazes on multiple fronts

A FIRE that burnt out scrub below Boambee Headland today reignited and took fire crews several hours to bring under control.

Five Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire and Rescue units responded to an early morning callout to the scene after the fire flared up following its containment on Sunday.

The Sawtell fire came as firefighters worked to contain the major fire that has burnt out more than 1800 hectares of bush along Morrows Rd, near Glenreagh over the past week.

The RFS says the fire front stretches from east of Glenreagh toward Nana Glen.

Seventy-two firefighters and 16 fire trucks are this afternoon on the ground fighting that fire with the assistance of seven waterbombing aircraft, RFS Media said.

RFS Superintendent Paul Norton said favourable wind conditions today have allowed firefighters to gain the upper hand with their backburning and containment lines.

"We are still trying to contain the Glenreagh fire and it has now been brought under the control of the Clarence Valley RFS," Supt. Norton said.

"On top of that fire, we also have that small fire that has reignited this morning near Boambee Headland and continues to burn through scrub on the headland.

"The wind over the weekend really killed off our containment efforts, but over the next couple of days conditions look fairly benign, but then again on Thursday there are forecasts of high temperatures again and hot northerly winds."
