Fireys flying high for training

WITH hot, dry conditions predicted across the region for the rest of the year, firefighters in the Tweed are making preparations for the upcoming fire season.

On the weekend, 41 Rural Fire Service volunteers from across the state converged on Murwillumbah airfield for an aviation training exercise.

Inspector Matt Inwood said the specialised training would equip the firefighters to work efficiently and safely around aircraft.

Insp Inwood said the firefighters learnt skills which would be crucial in emergency situations with firefighting aircraft.

Stokers Siding resident and private pilot Greg Challinor said so much activity was a spectacle for the airfield.

The weather bureau recently announced the arrival of El Niño.
