Drunken deckhand cops decade-long driving ban and jail time

IT WILL be more than a decade before a trawler fisherman, who drove drunk and without a licence almost every time his ship sailed into port, can get behind the wheel of a car again.

Marc Thomas Brewster, 28, will likely be spending a lot more time at sea following his release from prison, after he was disqualified from holding a driver's licence for a total of ten-and-a-half years.

Dressed in prison issue from the Maryborough Correctional Centre, where he has been for almost a month, Brewster, pleaded guilty in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Wednesday to two counts of disqualified driving, failing to stop, speeding, two counts of drink-driving and assaulting police.

The court heard Brewster's way of life was to work hard only to get on to land, go to the pub and "spend all that money" resulting in a series of bad choices and one unfortunate incident late last year where he challenged arresting officers at Townsville to shoot him but ended up being tasered instead.

Describing his client as possibly the most experienced and talented deckhand for fishing vessels in the country, defence lawyer Allan Mallard said jailing his client was a waste of time as the "same demons" would be waiting for him at the gate when he left and urged the court to consider a "ridiculously short" sentence so he could enter rehab.

Accepting Brewster was a hard worker, Hervey Bay Magistrate Graeme Tatnell said while he was not going to "throw away the key", he was "going the right way" about killing someone in a crash and he needed to serve some time.

The head sentence was 12 months with parole release in June.
