Five-vehicle wreck as traffic turmoil unfolds in region

IT WAS nothing short of miraculous there were no deaths on the Bruce Hwy yesterday following a serious crash near Midgee.

It is believed the crash started about 2.30pm when a truck sideswiped a stationary semi-trailer, causing a chain reaction that resulted in three vehicles and two trucks being wrecked.

In the midst of the chaos, the truck ran over a late model Magna sedan carrying a man, his wife and their child.

Incredibly, the male occupant of the Magna was the only person injured, escaping from the crash with a fractured right arm, which he was treated for at the Rockhampton Hospital.

After crushing the Magna, the heavy vehicle ran over the top of a Triton, where witnesses say the Mackay driver managed to avoid injury by reclining his seat before escaping.

Police were also called to three other traffic crashes yesterday afternoon:

  • A two-vehicle crash occurred on Gladstone-Benaraby Rd, near South Trees Dr at 5.10pm. No one was injured.
  •  At 4.30pm, another two-vehicle crash occurred at Dixon Dr between a 21-year-old male driver and a 24-year-old female driver.
  • One of the drivers was taken to hospital, but police were unable to say which one.
  • And at 3.50pm, there was another crash on Gladstone-Benaraby Rd, this time near the Toolooa Bends. The crash involved three vehicles.
  • One driver was charged for driving without due care and attention and for driving unlicensed.
