Football precinct aims high
IT is hoped a new football facility in Kings Forest will help the Tweed attract an international football team during the Asian Cup in 2015.
Plans for the football precinct, featuring a modern three-module clubhouse plus three playing fields, are coming together and are expected to come before Tweed Shire Council in August.
The Depot Road fields will be home to the Kings- cliff Soccer Club and Tweed Valley Kings, but Pete Gladwin, who is leading the project on behalf of the club, sees it as a wider opportunity for the shire.
“It is a long process, but we are determined to get it right,” Mr Gladwin said.
“This is a project for Kingscliff, but we are looking at it as an opportunity for the wider football fraternity.
“With 2015 Asian Cup games at Skilled Park, there will be Korean and Japanese teams looking for a base in the area and we could have them training at Depot Road.
“This facility opens up a lot of possibilities for football, and the shire.”
Construction of stage one is expected to be approved when it goes before the council.
Mr Gladwin said there is money “in the pot” for stage one, but once plans are approved, the club will be looking for further funding from the state and federal governments to finish it.
The club is forced to effectively shut down in the off season, with the Cudgen cricket team taking over Reg Dalton Field between September and April.
“This project will allow the club to operate all year round,” Mr Gladwin said.
“With the growth of the game in the shire we need to be a 12-month club; it is part of the evolution of the game.”
The fields are located in the centre of what will be a thriving community hub, when the Kings Forest development is finished.
