Foster to remain in jail

THE Gold Coast's most notorious conman, Peter Foster, will spend the next four days in a prison cell after a planned weekend court appearance was cancelled.

Foster, 49, was arrested yesterday at his mother's bedside in Pindara Private Hospital where she was being treated after suffering a stroke earlier in the week.

Detectives went to the hospital's coronary care unit and arrested him on two contempt of court warrants issued by the Federal Court in Sydney.

The Justice department said Foster would appear in weekend sittings of the Southport Magistrates Court today, however, prosecutors told reporters he would be held in custody under a federal warrant, which allows police to detain him until Tuesday morning.

The Commonwealth will fly a senior prosecuting barrister to the Gold Coast to appear for the prosecution on Tuesday morning.
