POLICE said they may have caught those responsible for producing counterfeit notes which have recently been circulating the Tweed.

Four men have been charged with a range of offences after police executed search warrants at a number of Gold Coast residences on Friday.

Detectives from the Gold Coast Major and Organised Crime Squad have been working on Operation Juliet Crime, targeting a variety of offences, from loan sharking to extortion and drug trafficking.

A Queensland Police spokesman said that they could speculate that the counterfeit notes originated from the residences.

The spokesman said that counterfeit notes seized by Tweed Police would have to be compared with any notes found during the Queensland Police investigation.

Police allegedly recovered quantities of dangerous drugs, firearms and more than $22,000 as a result of Friday's search warrants.

A 43-year-old man from Broadbeach Waters was charged with five counts of extortion, serious assault, assault occasioning bodily harm, possession of dangerous drugs, possession of a firearm and possession of a drug utensil.
