Gilmore attacker refused bail: court
FOUR-TIME world champion surfer Stephanie Gilmore's alleged attacker was refused bail in Lismore Local Court on Tuesday and will face charges for that assault and other offences next month.
Ms Gilmore was assaulted near her home at Tweed Heads in December last year, suffering a fractured wrist and cuts to her head and hand.
Julius Sterling Fox faces three charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm as well as two later unrelated charges for behaving in an offensive manner in a public place/school and being in custody of a knife in a public place.
In the meantime Magistrate R Denes continued Fox's interim orders.
The assault made national headlines, highlighting ongoing problems of violence on the Tweed Coast, and threw Ms Gilmore's world surfing championship ambitions into disarray.
Last weekend Ms Gilmore claimed her first title since the attack, taking out the Roxy Pro in France, but it was a bittersweet moment as her opponent in the final, Hawaiian surfer Carissa Moore, had already taken out the world title simply by qualifying for the contest.
“Today was unbelievable because so much has gone down,” Gilmore said.
“(Moore) is definitely the strongest of everyone this whole year and she has been in every single final and that is a new record (but) to beat the freshly-crowned world champ is pretty cool.
“In my perfect world somebody would be crowned world champ and I would take the (event) win.''
