Fraser Coast youth boot camp cops a stomping in review

THE controversy over the Newman government awarding the Fraser Coast youth boot camp is still raging, with an independent review underway.

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath told Queensland Parliament the decision to award the contract to the Fraser Coast boot camp was not the best choice.

"There were suitable lower cost service providers available," she said.

"In fact, in awarding the Fraser Coast boot camp, the then attorney-general rejected the panel's independent advice and awarded the contract to one described as unsuitable.

"It was the 10th ranked and the most expensive.

"For the Fraser Coast the Auditor-General noted the state is paying $2900 more per participant than it is for the Rockhampton early intervention youth boot camp and $5500 more per participant than the evaluation panel's preferred tender."

Former attorney-general and Sunshine Coast MP Jarrod Bleijie rejected Auditor-General Andrew Greaves's report, which found the awarding of the contract was open to accusations of favouritism.

But Mr Bleijie said he focused on the best, not the cheapest, option.

Ms D'Ath said she would receive audit and advisory company KPMG's review next month.
