Free New Year transport on offer

NEW Year's Eve revellers have the dreaded trek home sorted this year with free public transport announced for both sides of the border.

QLD transport minister Annastacia Palaszczuk has secured free Translink bus and rail travel on the Gold Coast between 9pm, December 31 to 5.30am, January 1 - an extra four-and-a-half hours beyond the original promise of 9pm to 1am.

The free overnight service includes additional buses between Tweed Heads and Southport every 15 minutes and hourly between Varsity Lakes and Burleigh and Coombabah and Southport.

The minister said she hoped public transport would become the preferred option for anyone travelling to fireworks and party venues across the Gold Coast and reduce delays at taxi ranks.

"This is a Queensland first and if it's a success, as I'm sure it will be, I'm keen to see it continue in coming years," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Anyone travelling this weekend should plan their journey and remember that public transport before 9pm will be discounted by 15% for go card users because it's travel in an off-peak period.

"Parents should also remember that children under 5 years of age travel free all the time."

Residents across the Tweed also have a limited New Year's Eve service with buses running between Coolangatta and Kingscliff almost hourly between 8.30pm and 3.15pm.

Full holiday services, including additional New Year's Eve and New Year's Day services are available at www.translink.com.au.
