Fresh is always best in your makeup bag

Makeup should always be stored in a cool, dark place, not left in the car or on a windowsill.
Makeup should always be stored in a cool, dark place, not left in the car or on a windowsill.

MAKEUP, like food, has an expiration date.

That's because bacteria can accumulate in foundations, or eyeshadows and mascaras and, the result can be rashes and irritation.

So before we hit the new year, take some time to sort through your makeup drawer and cosmetics bag.

Bin anything that is older than these guidelines:

Mascara - three months

Liquid foundation/tinted moisturiser - 12 months.

Cream Products (Eye shadows, blushes) - 12-18 months.

Lipsticks and Lip Pencils - two years.

Powder products (face powders, eye shadows, blushes) - two years.

It also pays to check the use by date on skincare.

Using something other than your fingers to dip into pots of creams can also stop bacteria breeding.

If you use brushes for your makeup, these should be washed and thoroughly dried regularly as they, too, can harbour bacteria.

Remember makeup should always be stored in a cool, dark place, not left in the car or on a windowsill.

Some skincare will keep better in the fridge, especially if it is low in preservatives and chemicals.
