Friends in the community - Friends of the Hound
Best Friends Pet Care Centre at South Tweed have a cheque for $1000 to present to local Greyhound rescue group, Friends of the Hound Inc.
As well as this generous donation, Best Friends have again nominated Friends of the Hound as the chosen charity for their Christmas Share the Care Campaign, which allows customers to join in the Christmas spirit by donating gifts of food, treats, bedding, toys, and accessories to this volunteer, non-profit group to help care for the dogs in their program.
Store Manager of Best Friends Pet Care Centre, David Carter, is glad to lend support to this worthwhile cause.
"We are happy to be able to help a local community organisation in this way. Greyhounds are beautiful dogs and the volunteers and foster carers of Friends of the Hound work very hard to save, care for and rehome the dogs. We think they do a great job and we are proud to contribute to their efforts. Christmas is a time for giving and we want to ensure that this includes animals in need."
Friends of the Hound President, Lisa White, said the group is very grateful for the generosity shown by Best Friends.
"It is heartening to be the recipients of such kindness and support. There are around 20,000 Greyhounds bred every year in Australia for a commercial racing and gambling industry - and the only possible outcome for this exploitation and overbreeding is an early death for the majority of these dogs. Our group is dedicated to helping Greyhounds, passionate about promoting their suitability as family pets and companions, and determined to raise further awareness of the plight faced by so many thousands of these gentle, friendly, lazy canines."
This support from Best Friends coincides with the current NSW Parliamentary Inquiry in to Greyhound Racing in NSW, in which animal welfare has been raised as one of the primary concerns. The CEO of Greyhound Racing NSW, Brent Hogan, when recently fronting the inquiry's parliamentary committee conceded that about 3000 Greyhounds were euthanised annually in NSW.
The Tweed community can join Best Friends in helping Greyhounds by visiting the store and buying a gift to place under the Share the Care Christmas Tree.
Best Friends Pet Care Centre is situated at 10 Machinery Drive, Tweed Heads South.
