Friends of the Pound find new home over border
THE Tweed-based Friends of the Pound animal rescue charity is making new friends across the border at Elanora.
The charity, which had been located at Tweed Heads South, has moved to The Pines Shopping Centre at Elanora and is providing its services to not only the Tweed but also the southern Gold Coast.
President Sonia Tritcher said her organisation was extremely grateful to The Pines management who came to the rescue of the charity and allowed us to set up at Shop 37 in the complex.
"We have a great premises in the former bank site which allows us to have a number of cats and kittens up for adoption,” Ms Tritcher said.
"Under centres rules, we can only have cats as they are far less noisy but our shop is set up with a number of former offices where we can allow the animals to play and exercise.
"The external location is proving to be very popular now that we have our signage up and the shop is drawing a lot of passers-by.
"We have been attracting schoolchildren in the afternoon who want to come in and see the cats and kittens and some have asked if they can play with them which is great for the animals.
"We even had one youngster who came in and grew attached to one young cat and eventually convinced her mother about getting it so everyone was happy.”
Ms Tritcher said Friends of the Pound worked in conjunction with the Tweed Shire Pound but also took in abandoned animals.
"We have about 50 active foster carers but there are far more animals than carers so we are always looking for volunteers,” she said.
"We would really like to hear from anyone living near The Pines who would like to help out in the shop, feeding and caring for the cats or just answering phone calls and inquiries.
"All our cats have been FIV tested, vaccinated, and treated for worms and fleas and we welcome anyone looking for a pet to come in and say hello to our animals.”
