Friends secretly pass the hat around to raise $5500 for Stu

A GROUP of friends has secretly raised more than $5500 for a Sunshine Coast couple that is doing it pretty tough.

Stu Phelps and fiancee Kaite Fitzgerald had their world turned upside down 18 months ago when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour that was pressing on his optic nerve and affecting his vision.

He was rushed into surgery but doctors were unable to remove the whole tumour and the couple has been living with uncertainty ever since.

Ms Fitzgerald is a full-time carer for her mother, who suffered a stroke two years ago, and said the compounded pressure of her fiance's battle with cancer was putting stress and strain on them.

They were shocked last Saturday night when they discovered their best friend Tom Brown and Kaite's brother Jason had been fundraising for them behind their backs for the past six months.

Mr Brown started the campaign with a Facebook group and when Mr Fitzgerald, who lives in Townsville, caught wind of it he got his business associates involved.

"We had no idea what they were doing," Ms Fitzgerald said. "It was a massive surprise."

While it began with Tom passing the hat around to some close friends, it soon ballooned and as of yesterday most of the people who had donated were strangers and had raised $5500.
