From drab to fab: Tweed Heads CBD get facelift funding
AN upgrade of the Tweed Heads CBD is back on the menu thanks to council funding.
Tweed Shire Council have confirmed they will allocate $1.6 million to sprucing up the area starting mid-March.
Patrick Knight, the council's director of engineering and operations, said it would be funding by selling council property, savings from other works and money previously earmarked for a Bay St refurb.
"Council undertook extensive community consultation in September and October 2013 and welcomed a considerable amount of feedback from the Tweed Heads Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Tweed Residents and Ratepayers Association, and Wharf and Bay Street traders," Mr Knight said."
That feedback included an emphasis on the need to beautify and rejuvenate Bay Street, improving safety for motorists, pedestrians and other road users in Bay Street and retaining the number of car parking spaces."
The refurb, known as stage two, will include reconstruction of the road surface along Bay St (from Endeavour Pde to Thompson St); beautification of Bay St (from Wharf to Enid Sts) and beautification of Wharf St from Florence to Francis Sts.
He said work would take three months, with steps take to reduce inconvenience to shoppers, residents and motorists.
