From league to leaky taps, Luke Covell scores a boost

WHEN Cronulla Sharks player Luke Covell hung up his boots for good in 2010 he decided to get back to his chosen trade of plumbing.

Not only did Covell say goodbye to football, he also left Sydney and returned to the Tweed where he was born.

Covell, his wife and two kids, settled in Banora Point and Luke signed up for a TAFE course in plumbling.

Unfortunately, the closest TAFE in NSW which offered the course was located in Wollongbar forcing Covell to travel about 200km each week just to go to school.

When he's not at TAFE, he works as an apprentice for Laser Plumbing in Tweed Heads.

Last week, Covell received some welcome assistance from Rheem, the manufacturers of hot water systems, which choose him as one of the lucky recipients of a Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grant to the value of $1000.

Rheem is celebrating its 75th birthday and has selected 75 apprentice plumbers who will receive $1000 each to commemorate the company's anniversary.

Covell said he was really happy to hear he'd been selected.

"I called my wife straight away and told the boys at work.

"My tools were stolen some time ago and I'll use to money to start my tool collection again and pay for travel expenses," he said.

He thought at first he'd missed out as a fellow student told him a couple of weeks ago, he'd been selected and would receive the $1000 grant.

"Last week, they informed me I also got the grant."

More than 300 apprentice plumbers entered the grants scheme which was developed to help apprentices and young people achieve their dreams and career objectives in plumbing.
