Funding flies in for Wedgetail Retreat

WEDGETAIL Retreat received a huge boost last week in the form of a cheque for $2250 from the Tweed River Jockey Club (TRJC).

The not-for-profit Tweed Palliative Support (TPS) group, which provides professional respite and hospice nursing care to people with a life-limiting illness, received the funds stemming from a sportsman's lunch held in June.

TPS national project manager Liza Nagy said the funds would be crucial in supporting Wedgetail, which required $500,000 in donations per year just to keep running.

"We service 1200 people in the community, so the money can go towards medical equipment, hospital beds and pain management,” Ms Nagy said.

"We're in desperate need as we're not government funded. We need 10 power adjustable hospital beds, we've only got funding for three, so this support is just fantastic.”

TRJC secretary Brian Charman said the money was raised in conjunction with several attendees who pitched in to make the donation possible.

"We always said we'd donate to a local charity and it's a project we're very proud of,” he said.
