A NEW Zealand fur Seal, possibly visiting from Victoria, has decided to stay the night at Greenmount point, Coolangatta.

Surfers walking around the famous point in Coolangatta yesterday were shocked to see the fully grown seal sitting on the rocks in the rain.

A few daring young grommets ventured closer than they probably should have and were greeted by a few barks and a shake of the head from their new furry friend.

This morning the seal was still sitting on the rocks, taking in the scenery.

Initially it was thought he or she was simply taking a rest after being caught in an ocean current running up the east coast.

After being sent images of the seal late yesterday, Sea World held off on taking any action.

But this morning Sea World sent a vet to check on the seal, who has several abrasions on its left side that could be affecting its health.
