Futsal star to don green and gold at World Championships

FUTSAL: Marian futsal star Kayle Pick will wear the green and gold proudly at the World Championships next year in May.

After one year playing the sport Kayle is reaching new heights and has made the Australian team, where he will compete against many other nations in Athens next year.

Kayle said he never expected to go as far as he had.

"I'm very excited for the tournament and honestly never thought I would get there," he said.

Kayle isn't the only local boy representing Australia in futsal, with Jesse Bugeja heading to the United Kingdom next year for the Under-14 boys' World Championships.

Both young stars preparation time is running out as the clock winds down for their trip overseas.

Kayle said he was doing everything he could, to be at his best for the event.

"The goal was to go down to tournaments in Brisbane and Sydney to get as much experience as I can," he said

Opportunities are limited in Mackay as the sport is still very new.

"Futsal isn't massive in Mackay but plenty of people have had a go and things are getting bigger," Kayle said.

The 15-year-old Mirani State High School student is now really into futsal and said it suited his background of playing football for Country United Football Club.

"Once you have the basic skills of football you will have the basics of futsal," he said

Kayle also encourages younger players to get involved and help grow the sport in Mackay.

On top of training and games, Kayle also coaches an U10s team in the local competition and says he enjoys it immensely.

"It's been good fun to teach the younger ones and see them improve," he said. "It's hard work but seeing them enjoy futsal makes me smile."

Kayle would like a future in futsal and is aiming to gain a sponsorship at his upcoming tournaments and urged everyone to have a go at the sport.

"I'd love to see everyone have a crack, its great fun once you know the basics," he said.
