Gallery dream becomes reality

THE Murwillumbah postcode will have a new art gallery from Saturday with the opening of 2484 Art in Brisbane St, adjacent to the Regent Cinema.

The man behind the project is Bray Park's Stuart L'Estrelle, an electrician whose dreams of opening a gallery have finally come true.

Mr L'Estrelle has dabbled in art since his early teens - painting, sculpting and creating artwork using a wide variety of materials such as timber, wire, clothing rags and mats.

"Opening a gallery is something I've wanted to do for a long time and thanks to the whole-hearted support of my wife, Deb, my dream has become a reality," Mr L'Estrelle said.

"Over the years we worked hard at our jobs - Deb's an office administrator - and we always managed to put something aside with the view of fulfilling my dream.

"Late last year Deb and I decided that the time had come to make the move and here we are," he said, sweeping his arm around the gallery.

When Mr L'Estrelle began renovating the gallery a few weeks back, he wrote on a small piece of cardboard and stuck it on the window - "Wanted - local artists to display their works."

"That little sign just generated so much interest. I must have had around 20 artists call in to say hello and congratulate me on opening the gallery and nearly all of them enquired about hanging their works at 2484," Mr L'Estrelle said.

"In fact three artists brought in examples of their works and they'll be on display when the gallery opens on Saturday."

Saturday's opening, from noon-7pm, will be a low key affair, but Mr L'Estrelle intends having a grand opening on January 28.
