'Gay cure' therapy to be banned

THERAPY aimed at stopping children being gay soon will be declared illegal in California in the United States, with the state governor to send the practice to "the dustbin of quackery".

CNN reported Gov Jerry Brown signed the bill into law on the weekend - it will take effect from January 1 It bans any attempt to change the sexual orientation of patients under the age of 18.

"This bill bans non-scientific therapies that have driven young people to depression and suicide," Gov Brown said on Twitter.

"These practices have no basis in science or medicine."

Those who deliver the therapy claim it is safe and worthwhile.

But American Psychology Association - which is the world's largest of its kind with more than 36,000 members - found the therapy posed a great risk, including increasing the likelihood or severity of depression, anxiety and self-destructive behaviour for those undergoing therapy.
