"'As a woman in public life, the violent threats take on another sickening dimension." - former Australian PM Julia Gillard.

Gillard says rape threats are normal for high-profile women

DAILY sexual and physical intimidation is par for the course for high profile women, Australia's first female prime minister says.

Julia Gillard made the observation at a memorial service in London for British MP Jo Cox who was shot and stabbed to death in northern England on June 16.

Ms Cox's 52-year-old alleged killer was charged with murder will stand trial under the UK's terrorism act.

"'As a woman in public life, the violent threats take on another sickening dimension," media outlets reported Ms Gillard telling the memorial crowd.

"Threats of violent abuse, of rape, are far too common.

"A woman in public view may expect to receive them almost daily."

Responding to the comments, Communications Minister Senator Fifield said gendered violence and abuse was "just not on".

"Whether they be in public office or whether they'd be people considering public office," he told ABC radio. - ARM NEWSDESK
