Gilmore looking good for finals
IT'S been four awesome days of non-stop surfing action at Snapper Rocks for the ASP Tour opener, the Quiksilver (men's) and Roxy (women's) Pro and now it's at the business end with semis for the girls and quarter finals for the guys.
However, after four long days of surfing today was called a lay day. Here's my preview of the final scenarios.
First semi in the Roxy Pro features Tyler Wright (Lennox Head) who was runner-up to Carissa Moore in last year's Roxy Final at Snapper.
Tyler turned the tables on Carissa in the quarter-final to eliminate the newly crowned Hawaiian world champion.
Moore has had a somewhat lacklustre start to 2012 unable to reproduce that special form.
Apparently the 19-year-old caught a staph infection on a trip to Tahiti and was bedridden before arriving at Snapper hence her rusty form.
However even if Moore was at her best, Tyler Wright has been explosive from the "gecko" as the event commentator keeps saying.
Wright has drawn North Narrabeen's Laura Enever who defeated Brazil's Silvana Lima in the quarters.
My tip is for the "Princess" to defeat the blond fashionista with the skimpiest bikinis.
In semi two it will be a battle royal against the Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa) and local favourite, Stephanie Gilmore (Kingscliff).
Both have had outstanding heats to reach the semis. Fitzgibbons has been in Gilmore's shadow over the last two years and was runner-up to Moore in last year's world title.
Sally's produced some of the best surfing yet in the quarters to knock out Hawaiian rookie, Malia Manuel.
Gilmore is back to her best and showing her form of old after a terrible season last year when she was attacked prior to this event, losing her confidence and world title.
The former four times world champ would like to be on top again and this semi will have all the fireworks!
My local sympathy goes with Steph but I know that Sal will be hard to beat!
My finals tip will be Tyler Wright to take on Stephanie Gilmore in the final and for Steph to win and regain her world title in 2012!
The quarters of the Quiksilver Means will be dynamite to say the least.
First quarter has Brazil's top ranking world pro, Adriano de Souza, up against Owen Wright (Lennox Head), the older brother of Tyler.
Both have title aspirations and at one stage last year Adriano was leading the ratings as the first Brazilian to do so while Owen Wright took the fight up to Kelly Slater.
This will be close but I'm tipping the highly technical Wright to take the passionate Brazilian down.
In the second quarter, defending champ Kelly Slater has been on fire and showing no signs of retirement.
The King takes on the Air King from Snapper, Josh Kerr. Kersey has never beaten Slats before and if he does, not only will he be doing a favour for all other title contenders, he could nudge Slater into retirement and not go on to the next event at Bells Beach.
I'm going out on a limb and tipping Kersey to create the upset of the event.
The third quarter is a rematch of last year's round 5 heat between South Africa's Jordy Smith and Snapper's favourite son and world runner-up Joel Parkinson.
Despite Parko looking to win at Snapper last year, he was pipped at the post by the powerhouse South African.
Both had a chance to win last year's title but in the end bad luck and the Kelly factor ended their world title dreams. Once again both have been in imposing form and this will go down to the wire but being a Gold Coaster I have to tip Parko. The Last quarter-final will be between WA's veteran pro Taj Burrow and Adrian "Ace" Buchan from Avoca.
Burrow won at Snapper against Jordy Smith in 2010 and was runner-up to Slater last year.
This perennial workhorse consistently puts on a top show and while "Ace" is also a consistent performer, I'm tipping the White Hornet from the West to out-ace the Ace!
To go out on a further limb, I'm leading by the heart and tipping Josh Kerr to meet Joel Parkinson in the final and for Joel Parkinson to win and set out for his maiden world title in 2012. And for King Kelly to retire!
