'Dad abused girl during Wizard of Oz'

A YOUNG girl was watching The Wizard of Oz when her father started sexually abusing her, a court heard yesterday.

The girl had gone to the toilet during a break in the film when she said her father entered and forced her to perform a sexual act upon him.

She would have been in the early grades of primary school at the time.

It's alleged they had been watching the movie together, while the girl's mother was sleeping.

The man, 36, is on trial for allegedly sexually abusing his daughter over a seven-year period, starting when she was two years old.

He faces four counts of indecent treatment of a child and a charge of rape during a trial in the Rockhampton District Court, which started on Monday.

The alleged abuse occurred between 1998 and 2005 in a number of Queensland towns including Gracemere, Gympie and Gilldora.

Crown Prosecutor Joshua Phillips told the jury that the defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, started grooming his daughter, now 14, for sex when he was in his mid-20s.

Yesterday the court heard a video recording of an interview with the girl, who described a number of incidents.

One time she said she was in the truck with her father, who put her hand on his private area and made her “pull it”.

Mr Phillips said after the girl told a psychiatrist and her mother about the abuse, she was interviewed by police.

The trial continues.
