Girlfriend, are you model material?

SHE might not be a beach blonde but that didn't stop the then 14-year-old Samantha Harris making the finals of the Girlfriend magazine model search five years ago.

While she didn't win, the part-Aboriginal girl from Banora Point hit the big time, appearing in the David Jones fashion parades and flying to Tahiti for a fashion shoot with Marie Clare magazine

Now other local model hopefuls will strut their stuff at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre this Saturday, June 25, at the Girlfriend Rimmel Model Search from 9am.

The competition, now in its 18th year, has uncovered young Australian glamazons such as Pania Rose and Abbey Lee.

Pania Rose has appeared on the covers of Sports Illustrated's celebrated swimwear edition, while Abbey Lee, who beat Samantha to the title in 2004, has modelled for Gucci in Milan and starred in ads for Dolce and Gabbana.

The competition winner will score a five-page feature in Girlfriend magazine and a two-year modelling contract with Chic modelling agency, plus a trip to New York for a meeting with the Next agency.

Former model and owner of Gold Coast-based Division Model Management, Kirsten Mitchell, said local girls shouldn't be discouraged if they don't win the heat.

“Competitions can be a good way to be discovered. You might have what it takes but you are not just what they want at that time,” she said.
