Girls to strut their stuff
TITANS players and officials will be keeping their fingers crossed that the bulk of the crowd rocking up to Skilled Park on Saturday night will still be warming their seats after lemons in their match against Cronulla following what will be two bottler games of footy played during the half-time break.
The Titans, good community citizens they are, are supporting the NRL’s Harvey Norman Women in League Round this weekend. It is a round in which tens of thousands of women involved in all levels of the sport are recognised for their contributions to the game.
Not to mention the countless mums who, for more than 100 years, have produced footballers and helped nurture their careers in the hundreds of ways that mums do.
On Saturday night spectators will be treated to two entertaining games of rugby league involving the area’s talented female rugby league players.
Both halves of the paddock will be in use during a slightly extended half-time break.
At one end of the ground there will be an under-11 exhibition match between two girls’ teams selected from the members of the fairer sex who play with and against boys on a weekly basis.
On the other side of the field a rip-snorter match is expected between arch-rivals in the under-17 competition, Nerang and Norths Ipswich.
From all reports, clashes between these teams passion, exhilarating individual and team tries and crunching defence.
Vanessa Rogers, who puts the polish on the Nerang outfit, says her team has been eagerly anticipating another crack at Norths Ipswich, as well as opportunity to play in front of a big crowd.
“All of us have been so excited ever since the Titans approached us about the promotion.
They’ll be so keyed up – I just hope they go out and play as well as they can,” Rogers said.
No doubt their apprehension was allayed somewhat yesterday morning when the girls played a game of touch against several of their Titans heroes, after John Cartwright had put his charges through an arduous training session.
To help celebrate the Women in League Round, the Titans have supplied 150 tickets, which the Gold Coast District Junior Rugby League will allocate to hard-working women who give their time to help kids play the game.
