Glen to walk, talk his way south

AUSTRALIANS are very charitable and generous, but don't always realise the extent of the suffering experienced by people in third world countries.

These were the sentiments expressed by Glen Hammermeister from Bulimba when he struck out on a 900km solo walk from Coolangatta to Sydney on Sunday.

With a 36kg pack on his back and a sturdy pair of boots, he embarked on his Walk Against Want with the aim to raise awareness of the plight of men, women and children in the world's poorest communities, who have to walk long distances each day to collect clean water and food.

“It's one thing donating money,” the 27 year-old said. “This way I can gain a real sense of empathy.

“I know it's not going to be easy and that's the point of the exercise.”

Glen will stop in towns and cities along the NSW coast to speak with individuals, schools and community groups about the need for action and what can be done to provide lasting solutions.

He aims to raise $50, 000 through his two-month walk, relying on his tent, backpack and the generosity of donors.

With minimal physical training and no trekking background, Glen is hoping to help Oxfam Australia provide those living in the poorest communities with the skills and resources to create their own solutions to poverty.
