Coast boundaries to be reviewed

THE Queensland independent Change Commission will review the Gold Coast City Council boundaries ahead of next year's local government elections.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Local Government Paul Lucas said the increasing population of the Gold Coast prompted the review.

“Since 2007, the population of Gold Coast City Council has grown by more than 43,000 people, which is an increase of more than 8%,” he said.

“The council has advised Division 1, which includes suburbs such as Coomera, Jacobs Well, Ormeau, Stapylton and Yatala, is above quota by more than 630 people.

“I have referred these matters to the independent Change Commission to conduct a redistribution for each division within the council to ensure fair electoral boundaries for next year's election.”

Mr Lucas said all divided councils must review their divisional quotas under electoral laws.

“The results of these reviews must be provided to me as Minister for Local Government so I can progress them to the Change Commission,” he said.

“The Change Commission can conduct public hearings.”
